The Balnaves Coonawarra Vineyard was established in 1975, and is situated at the southern end of the Coonawarra Terra strip.
The family has been associated with the district since 1855 and Doug, Annette, Kirsty and Pete Balnaves remain fully committed to a high level of ‘hands-on’ involvement.
- Winemaking
2021 was an outstanding vintage. The mild growing season resulted in considerable depth of colour and flavour in the wines. From the 1973 planted Paulownia and Vortmann vineyards, Shiraz was harvested at the end of March and fermented with 28% whole bunches for 8 days. Matured in large format French oak (34% new) for 13 months.
- Tasting Notes
A bright and lifted nose of red cherries and crisp blackberries with whole bunch perfume. Intense red fruit complements aromatic pepper and spice from the oak. A vibrant and elegant example of Coonawarra Shiraz.
- Bouquet
Vibrant red in colour with an aromatic nose of red plum and mulberry.
- Palate
Lifted red fruit on the palate complemented by sweet vanilla spice from the oak. Medium bodied with supple tannins and great length. An elegant Shiraz, reminiscent of the first wines made in Coonawarra.
- Peak Drinking / Cellaring Potential
This wine will reward from careful cellaring and we recommend decanting before drinking.
